My work addresses the process of assimilation for those outside the mainstream through painting, installation, and collage. Informed by my family’s immigrant experience as well as the heavy-handed influence of Western advertising, the clash of imagery and seemingly disparate scenes offer slippery fragments of memories woven with exaggerated cliches of a foreign existence. By reinventing these personal accounts and inserting notions of commercial media—both past and present—I examine the social cues that define the quintessential “American identity”.
